In 1872, the Nieuwe Water (New Waterway), a deep-water channel opened, was constructed (1866-1890) to allow access to large ocean-going vessels from the North Sea. This channel, and the expansion of trade it brought with it, was largely responsible for the city's economic boom in the late 19th century.

The principal imports of this area are oil, ores, and grain.
