Bristol
INTRODUCTION
Bristol
is an exciting city and the perfect short break
destination. Chosen as the best European Center
of Culture, Bristol proudly displays its mix of
historic and new and celebrates in style with
a year round calendar of events and festivals.
Bristol's position on the rivers Frome and Avon,
which flows into the Severn, made it an ideal
situation for a port. Although not without west
coast rivals, it was second only to London for
many years in the amount of trade, which passed
through it.
The harbourside
Maritime Heritage Centre contains an excellent
exhibition on the history of shipbuilding in the
port.
Famous people
connected with Bristol tend, it seems, not to
be Bristolians by birth. A notable example of
this is John Cabot, the discoverer of Newfoundland,
whose monument, the Cabot Tower, is shown here.
Those Bristolians
who have gained honour in their native city are
relatively unknown outside the immediate area,
although, of course, there are exceptions.
Also there
are those who, for one reason or another, have
been only too eager to shake Bristol dust from
their feet and have gained fame elsewhere.
This tour
brings to your notice some of the famous people
who have lived in Bristol over the years. The
list is not yet complete and will be added to
from time to time.
